Foreign mining companies are expanding their operations in the Philippines and many people are organizing against their operations because they believe that these activities are destroying our environment and our livelihood. The Bishops of the Philippines have made a strong statement against mining. The Subanen people, along with the local church, are engaged in a struggle for the rainforests and their own culture as a mining company enters their ancestral domain. Columban Kathleen Melia describes aspects of this struggle.
It is all very quiet in the mountains of Midsalip. Have the mining companies given up? There were some local, small scale mines established for gold but after protests from the people to the local government, these have been shut down. At the moment it seems to be a time of waiting to see what will be the next step of the mining giants. Whatever, the people are ever vigilant.
